PhotoNest Backup ("the app", "we", "us") is an iOS app that backs up the photos and videos in your device's library to your own Synology NAS. This Privacy Policy explains what data the app handles and how your privacy is protected.
Your photos and videos never reach us. They are transferred directly from your device to the Synology NAS you own and control, over your own network or internet connection. The developer does not receive, store, or have access to your media, your NAS files, or your NAS password.
Information we collect
- Your NAS connection details. The address, account and password of your Synology NAS are stored securely in the iOS Keychain on your device only, and are used solely to sign in to your NAS. They are never sent to us.
- Backup metadata (on-device). Records of which items have been backed up (identifiers, file hashes, timestamps, status) are stored locally on your device to avoid re-uploading duplicates. This stays on your device.
- Usage analytics. If enabled, we use Mixpanel to collect pseudonymous, aggregate usage events (for example, which features are used and how many items are backed up — never the content of your photos or videos), along with your device model, OS version, app version and a random install identifier.
- Crash & diagnostic data. If enabled, we use Sentry to collect crash logs and technical diagnostics (device type, OS version, stack traces) so we can fix bugs.
- Subscription status. We use RevenueCat and Apple to manage the optional "PhotoNest Pro" subscription. This includes your purchase and subscription status, Apple transaction identifiers and an app-generated user id. Payment is processed by Apple — we never see your card or payment details.
What we do NOT collect
- The content of your photos or videos.
- The files stored on your NAS.
- Your NAS password (kept only in your device's Keychain).
- Your precise location, contacts, health data or browsing history.
How we use your information
- To connect to your NAS and back up your selected media to it.
- To keep track of what has already been backed up, so uploads are not duplicated.
- To understand how the app is used and to improve its reliability and features.
- To diagnose and fix crashes and bugs.
- To provide and manage your subscription entitlement.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for advertising.
Third-party services
The app relies on the following providers, each governed by its own privacy policy:
- Apple (App Store & in-app purchases) — apple.com/legal/privacy
- RevenueCat (subscription management) — revenuecat.com/privacy
- Mixpanel (analytics) — mixpanel.com/legal/privacy-policy
- Sentry (crash reporting) — sentry.io/privacy
Your Synology NAS is your own hardware; its data handling is governed by Synology and your own configuration, not by this app.
Data retention & deletion
- On-device data (NAS credentials, backup metadata) is removed when you sign out or delete the app.
- Analytics and diagnostic data are retained by the respective providers for their standard retention periods.
- To request deletion of any data associated with you, email us at swift2geek@gmail.com.
Children
PhotoNest Backup is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Security
NAS credentials are stored in the iOS Keychain. Connections to your NAS use the address and protocol you configure. No system is perfectly secure, but your media is transferred directly to your own NAS and is never routed through our servers.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above.
